In the wake of recent flooding across the Hill Country, many children and families are navigating the emotional and physical aftermath. Displacement, disruption, and grief can have a significant impact on a child’s ability to feel safe and regulated. At Child Advocates of Montgomery County, we believe that every child deserves connection, healing, and hope—and that starts with simple, intentional care.
Using the principles of Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI), we’re sharing six easy-to-implement tools that help calm stress responses, promote emotional expression, and build a sense of safety.
Disaster recovery is unpredictable—your child’s day shouldn’t be. Set consistent wake-up and bedtimes. Use a dry-erase board to map out their daily routine. Why it matters: Predictability lowers anxiety and restores a sense of safety.
Offer protein-based snacks and drinks about every two hours. Why it matters: Grief and stress can suppress appetite. Stabilizing blood sugar boosts mood and strengthens coping.
Ask your child (or yourself): “What two words describe how you’re feeling right now?” Try it three times a day, and write it into your schedule. Why it matters: This simple habit encourages emotional awareness in a non-overwhelming way.
Jump, climb, stretch, dance—just 10 to 15 minutes every 3–4 hours makes a difference. Why it matters: Physical activity releases brain chemicals that reduce anxiety and promote well-being.
Find time for 10 minutes of natural light several times a day—on a porch, through an open window, or outside if safe. Why it matters: Sunlight boosts serotonin, which can help with mood regulation and energy.
Breathe in for 4 counts → Hold for 4 → Exhale for 4 → Hold for 4. Repeat. Why it matters: This technique activates the body’s calming response and soothes the nervous system.
If your organization is responding to families affected by the floods, we invite you to partner with us. We are offering free TBRI®-based trauma response and recovery training for community partners in the Hill Country region.
