We invite you to meet Michael and Tenille Crosby. Michael and Tenille joined Child Advocates as volunteers in 2023, and they have served nine children across all areas of advocacy, including child welfare, Justice-Involved Youth, and educational advocacy.

Senior Director of Programs & Services Camille Davis said she can assign the couple to any case, knowing they will advocate with deep care for both the children and families.

“Tenille and Michael are a dream team,” Camille said. “They bring an incredible amount of insight and objectivity to every case. They can see the full picture while remaining connected to each child. Their partnership enhances their impact—they communicate seamlessly and support one another. Families feel safe with them.”

We asked Michael and Tenille to share about their experiences as Advocates. 

Tell us about your background. Is there anything about your life experience that shapes your approach to advocacy?

I am a retired United States Marine who spent the majority of my military career serving overseas. Following my military service, I retired from the Department of Homeland Security where I was part of an agency who works closely with matters often involving vulnerable or at-risk immigrant children.

My wife is a U.S. Army veteran and currently serves as a federal law enforcement officer with the Department of Homeland Security. A portion of her work involves supporting and protecting detained juveniles. Through both our professional experiences and our family’s commitment to public service, we have developed a deep appreciation for the importance of advocating for children, particularly those who may not have a strong voice of their own. These experiences have shaped my belief that every child deserves safety, support, and the opportunity to succeed. 

What sparked your interest in volunteering as an Advocate?

As we explored volunteer opportunities, we learned about Child Advocates and were inspired by its mission to support children during difficult periods in their lives. Knowing that a caring, consistent adult can make a lasting difference for a child motivated us to become involved. We wanted to use our life experiences, leadership skills, and commitment to service to help ensure children have someone advocating for their best interests and well-being. This opportunity allows us to continue serving others in a meaningful way while helping children feel heard, supported, and valued.

In your own words, explain the role of an Advocate and why this work is so important for a child in care.

We believe that many families involved with Child Protective Services (CPS) may feel overwhelmed, misunderstood, or fearful of the process. An Advocate provides a positive and supportive presence for both the child and the family. Advocates help ensure that a child’s voice is heard and that their best interests remain the focus throughout the case. Many of the children we have worked with have formed strong bonds with us because they know we genuinely care about their well-being. Having a trusted adult who can provide support, consistency, and encouragement can make an incredibly difficult situation much less stressful for a child.

Why did you decide to advocate in a Justice-Involved Youth case?

Our goal has always been to help children whenever there is a need. We were open to serving in any type of case where we could make a positive impact. The staff within the Justice-Involved Youth program are incredibly supportive, knowledgeable, and passionate about their work, which encouraged us to become involved. After learning more about the program and the youth it serves, we looked forward to the opportunity to contribute and make a difference.

What has surprised you most about your experience as an Advocate?

What has surprised us the most is the number of children facing extremely difficult and challenging circumstances. While every child’s story is unique, the common theme is that many of these children are struggling through situations that are beyond their control. It has been both eye-opening and rewarding to see how much of a difference a caring Advocate can make in helping a child feel supported and valued.

What has been the most challenging and the most rewarding part of advocacy work?

The most challenging part has been witnessing the hardships that some children experience, particularly cases involving abuse, neglect, or unstable living situations. As parents of a six-year-old child ourselves, it is heartbreaking to see children facing such difficult circumstances. The most rewarding part is seeing positive outcomes for the children we serve. Knowing that our involvement has helped contribute to a child’s safety, stability, or well-being makes the work incredibly meaningful and worthwhile.

Share about your experience working together on cases.

Working together as Advocates has been a natural extension of our partnership. We have always enjoyed serving our community as a team, and advocacy has given us another opportunity to do that. We approach each case with compassion, teamwork, and a shared commitment to helping children succeed.

What are some benefits to working with a co-Advocate?

One of the greatest benefits of working as co-Advocates is the ability to bring different strengths and perspectives to each case. In our partnership, we complement one another well. Tenille is highly organized, detail-oriented, and skilled at navigating documentation and case information, while I tend to focus more on personal time fostering relationships and connecting with people. Together, we are able to approach each case from multiple angles, which helps us better serve the children and families we advocate for.

What do you wish the community better understood about children in crisis?

I wish more people understood that children in crisis are not defined by their circumstances or the challenges they face. Many have grown up without the stability, guidance, or positive influences that others may take for granted. At their core, they are simply children who need support, encouragement, and opportunities to succeed. With the right resources and caring adults in their lives, these children can thrive and reach their full potential.

Through volunteering, what have you learned about children and families in crisis?

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that many behaviors we see in children are often shaped by their environment and life experiences. Many of the older children we have worked with have faced significant challenges at home and have not always had positive role models or consistent support systems. When they are shown patience, encouragement, accountability, and genuine care, they often respond in remarkable ways. It reinforces the importance of providing stability and positive influences in their lives.

Do you have a favorite moment of advocacy?

Rather than a single moment, the memories that stand out most are the times when a child truly feels safe and connected. One of the most meaningful experiences is when a child gives you a hug and doesn’t want to let go. Those moments remind us that every child wants what all children deserve — to feel valued, cared for, and important. Experiencing that trust and connection is incredibly rewarding and something we will never forget.
